My son was attacked and the attacker only got probation.

A man attack my son and was convicted of assault and battery. He was sentenced to a year of unsupervised probation. He was also sentenced to a year of unsupervised probation for threatening to attack my son. He was simply given a slap on the wrist. It has been months since the attack and my son still has nightmares. Do we qualify for any emotional distress compensation? Can my son be compensated for the scar he has on his face? Can he be compensated for how this man has affected his daily life?
